New Job..claiming mileage....

Hi

Hoping someone can help me. I have taken a second job, and am using my car for that job and my new employer doesnt pay mileage. They informed me I can claim it from the IR.

Im a home care assistant so I travel to peoples homes.

I started the job and asked about the mileage again and then was told I cannot claim it from home to my first call and can only claim it from my second call, would anyone know why that is? as I read up a little and if your work is like a temporary place of work like mine is, as its clients houses then you can claim from home? The thing is i do two calls then i come home for half an hour then out for two more which means if what my new employers are saying is correct I cannot claim any mileage in that case? I am talking about 60 to 70 miles a week which doesnt sound a lot but it all adds up.

Does anyone have an information they could share I have looked on the IR site but Im a little confused.

As people may know the care industry doesnt pay too well plus with it being a second job I am taxed at 20 percent on anything i earn with them which I could cope with but not paying for all my own mileage too.,

Anyway advice of help would be much appreciate?

Thanks in advance

Sorry if this is not in the correct place.

    Debbie,

You would need to complete a form 87. The notes for this form state Business mileage is the number of miles you have travelled while actually doing your work or spent travelling to a temporary workplace. You cannot get tax relief for travel between home and a permanent workplace as business miles, unless you have a special agreement with us.

As you do not travel to a permanent place of work I can see no reason why you would not be able to claim for all journey's.

Your best option would be to call the tax office and just ask them, they are very friendly.
