Overpayment to debt collector - how to get back

I made a settlement payment to Robinsons Way at the end of Nov 2013, the amount was agreed between both parties. Once the settlement payment was made I then cancelled my dd.
I have since requested confirmation that the account was closed, in response I received a statement requesting payment of the outstanding balance of £50-, yes they owe me £50. After numerous emails and phone calls they are now telling me that I have to request the monies owed from HBOS (the original creditor) even though they bought the debt some years ago.
Surely RW owe me the money? Are they fobbing me off? Can I claim interest?
I've seen a number of threads on here regarding their ways of 'business'. Any advice appreciated.

Sounds like they are fobbing you off.
If you write to them, formal complaint. Make it clear that you want the money back plus a sum for your time and inconvenience.
Mention if they refuse, you will refer to FOS and OFT.
That should wake them up, as the FOS referral comes with a £500 referral fee for them

its not clear or I am not understanding.
Did a direct debit go out after you had cancelled it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Write to them and tell them they must pay you back.
If they don't, you will be forced to visit their premises where you could force entry and seize goods to sell. You may petition the courts for their bankruptcy, which could mean they loose their property.
Tell them you will be checking their bank and financial details in order to see what they can pay, and if they don't pay, in full, within 7 days you will plague them with threatening letters and phone calls.
Oh, and you have added £288,99 to their account by way if a fee for your letter; if you end up paying them a visit, this will incur a further £400 fee plus admin. And if all this doesn't work, you will sell their debt to 'mugger Johnson' down the pub for a pint, and you DONT want to mess with him!.....
;-)
There was a guy a few years ago who commissioned bailiffs to enter a branch of HSBC and levy goods for money he was owed. They started to unplug computers and things and he had his money back in minutes! Haha.A computer once beat me at chess.

Thanks Happy_Bunny, I've done this via email and included each director on the board.
I know it seems daft to make such a fuss over £50, but I've been taken for a mug one too many times and now I've finally got myself in a good financial position, I don't want this last little bit hanging over me.
McKneff, yes a dd went out around the same time as my bank advised not to cancel any dd's until after accounts were settled (the other accounts have returned any overpayments).
GuttedTBH, I like the way you think. I'll give this a go if I don't get a reply from RW.0 -

Probably worth writing an actual (pen and paper) letter and getting proof of posting.0 -

They are taking the p!ss with that reply. You can't do that for £50 and without a court order
Tell RW that you will take them to the FOS.
Still rolling rolling rolling......

Yeah, sorry. My reply was kinda tongue in cheek.....
Not meant to be serious, but we would all like to wouldn't we?
However the thing about not being able to to do it for 50 quid is wrong. Anyone can commission the services of DCA for any amount should you choose to. Of course you wouldn't for 50 quid as it would cost you many times more than you are chasing, but you could.
Think the guy in the bank was owed a few grand or something.
Good luck..

Have also sent a letter to their complaints mgr today. Hopefully they'll send me my money and that'll be the end of it (but I suspect they'll drag it out if what I've read about them is anything to go by).0
