Married Couple Italian + Indian, excellent + bad credit

I am Italian and my partner is Indian, we got married just a month ago. I have excellent credit score but his is poor (only 1,5 year living in the UK), never missed payments, no ccj.
He just summit application for 5 year dependent visa.
We want to make a joint application for a mortgage, will banks consider us, taking to account our circumstances? Will my excellent credit score balance out.
Halifax told, it won't be a problem, Santander is more cautious.
We are scared of negative impact of refusals.
Thanks in Advance.
