Thanks for the genuine OS advice JackieO.

There may not have been J cloths back in the day but I remember my grandmother used to buy 'stockinette roll'. This was like a big roll of dishcloth fabric. It was a creamy colour natural cotton so she used to bleach it with her whites so it was super clean for using for kitchen jobs.

Gosh I can remember buying that stuff in Woolworths and it was such a great thing to use as you just cut however much you needed of the roll.In 1965 I think it was about half a crown a roll ( about 13p)and you got loads of it on a roll.My late OH used to pinch my grotty bits of cloth it to clean his car hub caps with :rotfl:We had an old ford anglia that had seen better days but was his pride and joy and he kept it spotless.far more than he ever did when our finances improved over the years and he bought newer cars :):):)Our old ford cost us £80.00 and we had it for about 5 years before it eventually went to the scrap yard and even the scrapper said he had never crushed such a clean car before:D
I think in those days you always seemed to find what you needed in Woolies for the whole household .Such a shame it shut down.

  • Without a meal-plan you're just chucking things in the supermarket trolley and hoping for the best.

Fruit and veg out of season is a huge drain on a budget, so I'd be re-thinking that asap.

    Is this the stockinette roll?

I don't remember it but in my first f-time job in 1984 a colleague's mum used to knit dishclothes, and they were browny/grey and needed to be bleached to make them white.
