Limit to number of hours that can be worked after age 65?

I have a friend who is approaching 65 and wishes to continue working for a couple more years to save money. Is there a limit to the amount of hours they are allowed to work? He's been told that there's a limit of 16 hours but I haven't heard of this and wonder if it's crossed wires somewhere. They had planned to continue working full time.

Another query which may be better in the pensions section, should they start claiming the state pension at 65 or when they finish work completely? They do have a company salary but it's a negligible amount, it's an area I know nothing of so would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
John

  • My dad is 70 this year and still works full time, so I don't think there isn't a limit - if there is he is well over it! Plus I'm pretty sure they couldn't apply a limit due to age without it being age discrimination?

There is no limit to the number of hours they can work. The 16 hours may be related to pension credits or some other Government Benefit.

As for claiming the state pension now, it will come down to personal circumstances and what sort of tax they are paying.

Thanks very much for the prompt replies - I'll advise them to speak to someone about their pension to work out what is the best approach to take.

As far as I know people who are approaching their 65th birthday now can work on. It used to be that people could be forced to retire when they turned 65 but lots of people are having to work on for financial reasons.

My mum is 65 in a couple of months and plans working on until shes 67 or 68, if her employer forced her to retire that would be age discrimination and they could be taken to tribunal.

You can delay taking the state pension but I dont know specifics.
  • I worked until I was 67 and claimed my pension at 60. If I had left my pension until 67 I would have got the same amount of money but in a lump sum.

I worked on 2 years passed my retirement, and took my pension as soon as I got to 60 and just invested it. Mother and grandmother both died early so I wanted mine as early as I could, just in case lol
As for the 16 hours, max. maybe a misunderstanding somewhere but there is no limit.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
