Pay Rise

Hi, I would appreciate a bit of advice, I have been with the same company now for 5 years and have never had a pay review during that time. I work in a small branch, the head office, is miles away and there are so many managers, I'm not even sure who to ask. I am paid hourly and it is above the minimum wage, although that is rapidly catching up. I think that unless I mention it then nobody is going to mention it to me. Do you think it would be reasonable to find out who to ask and construct an email to that effect.

Why have you not had a rise for 5 years?
Find out what other like for like roles are paying out there. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
There's no structure in place for pay reviews, I have no idea what other people in the company are on, but looking at comparable jobs, it looks like they are mostly paid more than me. I've never been in a position where I have to ask for a pay rise but if I don't, I can't see them offering anything.0

Do you have appraisals at all? There's no structure in place for pay reviews, I have no idea what other people in the company are on, but looking at comparable jobs, it looks like they are mostly paid more than me. Ask to speak to the HR team or your boss and say you have been there 5 years and doing research like roles are paying X but you are on Y and see what they say.
If they say no just look for another job. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
how is the company doing? If well then ask and maybe work out what you would be if it rised with inflation and then look for a middle ground if they are accepting of the need for a riseDon't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0

We are supposed to have appraisals but they never happen. HR is basically a couple of people who prepare the wages, I think I need to speak to the owner as ultimately it would be his decision. I thought if I construct an email that might be better as a starting point, I know I will get tongue tied if I just ring him up. It's not something I've done before and I hate the thought of it but also I am starting to feel resentful and used by them.0

No you don't want to do it by email or phone. You need to do it face to face or arrange a time to call (so you can prepare) but you need to arrange this in advance. We are supposed to have appraisals but they never happen. Why do you feel resentful? They are meeting their obligations of the contract you signed. We are supposed to have appraisals but they never happen. Don't be afraid about asking for a pay rise. It's a two way street. I'd bring your concerns to your manager, firstly. If it comes back no, perhaps you consider jumping ship depending on your personal circumstances.0

Are you a union member? If so you could ask your steward for advice and support on negotiating a rise. They may be able to offer some tips on tactics that worked for others.0

I used to be in the same position, and , credit to them when I brought it to my employer he then became aware that i wanted career progression and not just "a job" and they considered me for future roles. It didn't happen immediately but effectively a role was created to accommodate me and I'm now on a wage I am v happy with. Try speaking to your managers/owner with similar thoughts in mind, make it clear you want to progress (they may just think you aren't interested in moving upwards).Oh, you wee bazza!0
