Which job offer is best?

  • I have done that through my tax self assessment form HMRC demand I fill in each year. They refunded the excess tax I had suffered as a result very promptly, and then amended my tax coding in the following year to reflect the expected relief (based on prior year) I was due.
  • Incidentally, I would recommend sounding out your current boss (assuming you have a good relationship) that you have a dilemma as you have been offered another job on more money elsewhere so, whilst you would love to accept their offer and continue with them, you just can't reconcile the fact you'll be earning £X amount more elsewhere.

You may just find that extra funds are forthcoming to take you at least part of the way to matching the other job's pay levels.

Not sure I will get offered more as I would then probably be on more than my manager...but I will obviously discuss this before formally handing in my notice.

    So...for clarity.

If I am on a 'car allowance' of £5000 - this is basically added to my salary and tax and NI are taken from this amount as my main salary. The only difference being pension contributions will come from my main salary only?

And I can claim back 40% of the difference between my mileage rate and 45p - This is paid back the following year through a better tax rate / code?

    Thanks
