Negotiating possible permanent contract

Hi
Looking for a bit of advice really. I'm on a 1 year contract until end June. Since I started I've been asked twice by my team leader if I'd like to be made permanent. Twice I've said 'Yes', but nothing has materialised. I sense that my team leader is looking for some sort of commitment from me, but I don't know what.
Now I'm getting a bit jittery as I can't afford not to be earning and it takes time to get a new job so I'm thinking I should start looking. However I really don't want to relocate again - I work in a fairly niche field and getting a new job would almost certainly mean moving again, but I would like to move flat and don't want to sign up to a 6 month letting agreement if they're going to wave goodbye at the end of June.
I have another 1:1 with my team leader this week. I'm very tempted to say something along the lines of 'I know we've spoken about me possibly becoming permanent, but I need something formal otherwise I'll have to start looking for something else as my contract will be coming to an end soon'. What should I say? Help
Thanks
G

I would ensure it's on the manager's radar, but it's a little early to let them know you're looking elsewhere. Just keep working hard and brown nosing the management for a while yet. The probably won't make you permanent until your contract is due to expire, if that's what they plan - gives them more flexibility that way.
Good luck!0 -

Thanks. I really can't afford not to move flat though - I need to find somewhere cheaper to rent and by the time it's all sorted I could be paying up to 3 months rent for somewhere I'm not living if my contract doesn't get extended/made permanent.
I've seen another job I'm interested in, but don't want to move unless I have to.Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending0 -

If rent is an issue become a lodger till the job is sorted.
I would raise the issue of extending asking when they are planning to look at it.
I would go to the one that will actually be making the call unlikely the line manager has that but maybe can influence.
Look for reasons why they may not extend, like is it funded, do they need you, could the job be done by others, finances tight...0 -

For personal reasons I can't become a lodger. I'm going to look to see if anyone has a self contained annex they might want to rent out shorter term.
It seems both my boss and myself wanted to address the issue of my contract today. I did leave a job spec on my desk over the weekend and my boss was in the office over the weekend. I didn't do it deliberately and it was half covered by my notebook, but she might have seen it.
My line manager has told me she's trying to get my contract made permanent or if that's not possible, extended. We're expecting some redundancies this year and there's a headcount freeze - apparently. Apparently because I've seen plenty of new people starting. I'm told making my contract permanent and/or extending it will need approval from my local Vice President in the department, HR and then approval from the Vice President of my division in the US.
We both agreed that it would be a waste of my training and coaching so far and she said she thinks I've got a lot of potential.
Thanks
