I was on jobseekers allowance for this short time
I phoned HMRC and they have advised me the underpayment is from the 2011/2012 Tax year as they have estimated the amount of JSA i received from Feb- April 2011 as they do not have specific numbers. This may have caused an unfair estimate of underpayment.
I have been advised to contact the Job Centre and ask for ' A Printout of Tax Details Enquiry Screen' and send it in to HMRC so they can recalculate.
I'll keep you guys updated. Thanks for all your help so far.Member #179 -The 'Save 12k in 2014' Challenge £1740/£50000 -

It still doesn't make any sense to me - how can a £425 underpayment have occurred from a period I was on JSA for a couple weeks?
I don't think a few weeks of JSA even comes to £425! let alone the tax for that period.Member #179 -The 'Save 12k in 2014' Challenge £1740/£50000 -
HMRC seem to assume that JSA never stops, even when you get a job! Plus on the details you've given, HMRC said it was in 2011-12, and you started your job in April 2011, at the start of the 2011-12 tax year. They must have assumed you carried on receiving JSA for a while, for some reason.
So *hopefully* any underpayment should be minimal, as you didn't receive (much) JSA in that yearExcuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard0 -
So.... I went down to my local Job centre today and sourced the tax details as requested by HMRC - It shows the total benefit I got was £90.03!! and £0.00 tax paid.
i phoned HMRC up straight away with the figures and they amended my tax code back to 944L. They said there is no underpayment as the benefit amount was estimated.
I asked if they wanted me to send a copy of the figures from the Jobcentre, but they said no.
All Fixed now & I'm quite happy with myself. :T
Just makes you wonder. There'll be a lot of people that wouldn't dispute the matter and would have been £425 down.
Thanks Everyone for your help.

It would be a good idea to check if you have overpaid tax for 2010/2011 as the jobseekers payment for the end of the year is a lot less than the tax allowance. Normally in these circumstances a tax refund would be paid by the Jobcentre, was this received?0 -
