Child benefit - can they take this much tax???

Hi. I'm new to this board but hoping for some advice. I've just recieved a revised tax code after filling in my self assessment and it says I owe £1758 in child benefit. Last year I claimed for one child so wouldn't have even been paid that much! This year I'll be claiming for two. (Or won't be claiming if they are just taking it back from me!)
Firstly which year is it taking money for and secondly does that sound right?! Thank you

  • You cant have been overpaid Child Benefit - do you mean Child Tax Credits?

As far as I'm aware you award for 13/14 is based on the income you've provided for 12/13 so therefore you will always be paid for 'last years' income.
