Like the other I estimate my spending before I go and add up going round. I do take a fallback of an extra £5 or take my cards just in case.
  • I'd say if you use your card at the moment, for the next couple of weeks do as normal but try and have a total in your head and see how close you are. After a couple of weeks doing this you should be confident to ditch the cards and go with X amount in your pocket.
What i sometimes do is write a list and estimate the cost before hand just to give me an idea of what extras i could possibly sneak in. Like said in earlier posts, rounding to the nearest £ is a good method.
If you end up at the checkout and you don't have enough. Don't be embarrassed, just ask them to take some items off. My OH worked on checkouts and she said people get stuff taken off all the time. Just put your treats through last so they are the first things to hand at the end.

The more you do it, the easier it gets.
I'm not lost. I'm just going the long way round.....

I also go onto the supermarket website and add up what I want, that way I know what I need to put in y purse.

I have an account at Nationwide, I transfer my £200.50 from Lloyds at the beginning of each month £48 goes into the car account to pay for insurance, servicing etc.......£32.50 to OH for his pocket money and £20 into my purse for petrol, that leaves £100 for my monthly shop. I draw what I need for my basic shop including meat and then draw what I need for a top up as I go along, last month I was under my budget by £17.45 which went into my holiday pot.
    Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.

    Thanks for all the ideas.

I'm trying to use cash too. Only last week I took £20 out of the ATM to put in petrol. I was at an Asda out of town. It had changed since the last time I was there. There was no kiosk to pay at anymore, you could only pay by debit or credit card at the pump. If i'd not had a card i'd have been stuffed. Going to another petrol station wouldn't have been an option as the nearest one was a few miles away.
