Dyslexia and work

Hi all :)

So am wondering if anyone else out there has dyslexia and finds it hard looking for the right job or finds it sometimes hard within their current job?

So I have mild dyslexia were I can read and write but can not understand grammar as you might be able to tell lol and sometimes find it hard to say certain words when under pressure. I have always had a job not a glamorous one but have always worked and am starting new job next month. My problem is I find it very hard to stay more then 6 months and find certain things at work hard. Don't get me wrong I always get work as I have done so much /: but its settling in I find hard and certain tasks like maybe writing a report as I get nervous about my grammar.

Anyone over come these issues and if so how?

Many thanks :)

Im dyslexic and have mainly practical jobs. I do have paperwork to do and it generally takes me longer than others. I don't tell people straight away as still find there is a stigma even although there is not officially. It doesnt help that there are dyslexic people in my work who use it as an excuse to do a poor job. Not much advice but your not alone!

This includes a free font which you can download to any normal computer. Might be worth trying this out? If there are restrictions at work, ask your IT department if it would be possible to install it. It should at least help you with reading documents.

can you not mention it to a new employer to get it out of the way.

Wait until you hand in a report and mention it then, say sorry if there are any mistakes, if so just let me know and I'll correct them as I have mild dyslexia.

Try Access to Work (google it), which is a government scheme aimed at keeping people with disabilities in work. They can assist with specialist equipment or software for example.

I have a double whammy in that I'm both Dyslexic and Dyspraxic.

Dyslexia seems to be more common and effectively acts as the poster learning difficulty, Dyspraxia is lesser known about but in many ways is closely related to Dyslexia as both are neurologically based.

Personally, I'm up front about my difficulties and disclose them at the earliest opportunity. I always approach work with the "right first time" attitude and am personally dissatisfied if I do poor job in any area.

I require minimal adjustments, but it's reassuring to know that I can seek them if I require them.

I never knew that dyslexia affected speech.
Is that a fact? Is there a definite test for dyslexia?
I wonder if I have it. I can't say certain words, and I sometimes fail to start a sentence, and then it all suddenly comes out at once at a million miles per hour and I can't be understood. Frustrated me for the last 20 years...

I rememebr watching a TV show on this, the presenter who was an actress (some TV show I never watched,) had dyslexia, it showed the different coloured light made it easier for her to read, for example wearing pink tinted sunglasses could help some people or reading on blue paper instead of white, she said it really made a difference for her.

She also did a test with speech, and it showed that her speech came from the same part of the brain a foreign person speaking English, so speaking English for her was like speaking a foreign language.
