5 years post discharge... Some questions

Hi, I've just joined here but have been a lurker for a while :)

I was declared bankrupt in June 2009, discharged early 2010. I've been building up my credit history since then and now have a Natwest CC with a £2k limit, Santander current account with a £1k overdraft facility, phone contract with O2 etc and seem to be pretty much back on my feet!

I will be in a position soon where I will have enough money to start thinking about getting a mortgage (at least 30% deposit) and I've signed up to Experian to look at my credit file. 3 out of 6 lenders haven't marked my file as "Settled" so I know this is something I need to sort out, but where do I start? I can't remember account numbers etc and can't remember, or find any paperwork telling me, the exact dates of bankruptcy and discharge. Do I write them a letter? Ring? Email?

Which leads onto my next question - I can't even remember which court dealt with my bankruptcy (really, really dark period of my life which I've tried to blank out) but I would like to get a copy of my discharge certificate. How do I go about doing this?

Also, once the 6 years thing is up, will the unsettled accounts just vanish off my record anyway? There's been no activity since the one default in the month I declared bankrupt, they just don't say they are settled. I've never missed a payment on anything in my life, apart from when I stopped paying because of the bankruptcy (had previously been paying loans by withdrawing cash on credit cards, but got to a point where I knew this couldn't go on, and could see no way out).

Thanks for reading :)

  • Hi I am in the same position my b/r should be off my record 25th Janueary, but some of the default dates were wrong on my equaax report so I am writing to the companies involved. On the equafax report there is a section called profile information which details the court you went to, also the companies and the address you need for them. I got details for next and RBS, I used the template given on link on equafax also. I have no account numbers but I detailed my address at the time, the amount owing, the default date they had and the one I want it amending too.

If the default date is correct, my understanding is that settled or unsettled they will just drop off after 6 years. But it will go off the default date, I had a post on here 6 years on and this was the advice I got. Like you I want to repair my credit so I can get a mortgage, good luck in getting it all sorted.

  • Thanks Jo :) Just looking now on Equifax to see if I can get the info then will start writing to them. I'm not seriously looking at getting a mortgage for another year or so, but I'm awaiting some inheritance which will make buying a house possible, so I'm trying to get as "squeaky clean" as I can in preparation!
