What is the best union to join?

Just a quick question.
The person is working in the private sector in industry/commerce, and would like to know the best union to join.
I have already suggested Unite, but are there any others?

The best union would be the one that's recognised by their employer (if any) failing that one that his colleagues belong to (thus helping to increase the chance of employer recognition) or one that is closely linked to his job/skill set (industry/commerce is a bit too vague to give names)
