  • I know this is supposed to be a money saving forum but we've just splashed out on an EGLU. Have been umming and ahhing for ages but we had some 'spare' cash (sort of) and we hadn't bought ourselves an anniversary pressie and we decided that we would also count it as an xmas pressie. Getting the chooks next weekend.
We have a 3 year old so we're treating it as a 'family project' so he learns how to care for animals/where food comes from.
I can't really justify the expense though, but I'll keep trying.....

I've got an eglu too. I know they're expensive but I love mine and they are so easy to clean. As for justifying the expense - I just keep telling myself I'm saving money on all the red mite treatments and wood preservative!! (probably take about 50 years before I'm saving money but anyway)

We're moving to the country and want chickens but I have a very stupid question: what happens when you guys are away for a week or two?

    it's a lot to ask friends/family to come feed/clean.

    What do you do?

You have done what you could.

Forget them as soon as you can."
  • The home made absolutely free chicken house is complete. We made the frame for the run seperately, it may not be a thing of beauty but ee by gum - it's sturdy!

Chickens arrive at the end of the month.
  • Personally, I think the EGLU is a fabby idea, but horrendously overpriced....

Our chickens have a home made run and coop....as long as you make sure it's 99.9% foxproof, you're well away....

What sort of chickies you getting?
    Is it payday yet?

  • npsmama - strangely, since we announced we were getting chickens friends and family have fallen over themselves to offer to come and see to them if we go away. My mother even said she would come and stay to look after them!!

Seems the appeal of the chicken is very strong and it's surprising when the discussion comes up how many people always say ' I've always wanted chickens'. Primeval urge??
  • I agree scrimping badger since i got mine the number of visits by friends and family has definately increased everyone loves them, and they are not as time consuming as people make out, you wouldn't have a problem going away npsmama.;)

Just wondered if anyone was selling their eglu to upgrade to the new cube. They look fab and i think they are better value than the eglu. The most suprising thing is they take up less floor space than the eglu:think:
