If you want meat for sandwiches, buy a small roasting joint, cook and slice. It works out much cheaper than buying sliced meats.
Another vote here for buying a joint and slicing, or how about rubber chicken it would give you the two other meals you need and plenty left for sandwiches.Slimming World at target0 -
My OH was eating that amount of butter a week up until the day he got his blood cholesterol level results back. Butter may be natural but it's full of saturated fat, it's not a healthy option if eaten in that sort of quantity! Now I buy one block of hard butter a month for cooking and baking for four of us and if OH wants spread he can use the healthier version the rest of us use. Or give spread up entirely, there's no necessity to use butter or spread if you're putting something else moist on bread like marmalade.
I go to Lidl for milk (79p for 2l semi skimmed), eggs (95p for six free range but not organic) bread (Hovis 79p a loaf, their own multigrain 79p), cold meats, cheese and yoghurts, all of which are far cheaper than say Tesco.Val.0 -
Hello again, just thought I'd check in. Only 48 hours to go and we will manage - just about! I spoke with my husband and he took us to Iceland in the end and picked up the bill! We spent just under £40 and we managed to get enough to see us through till Tuesday. I also made a delicious cottage pie that'll last us for tea tomorrow night.
Thank you for all of your suggestions. I am pleased we managed to get through the month on less than £200, considering what we normally spend, and we only had 1 take away. Next month I am determined to get myself into FarmFoods and Lidl to see how I can make healthier choices as Iceland is good for keeping costs low, but just so full of e-numbers!
Thanks again, really appreciated your help.

Put a test shop into My Supermarket - it will give you the cheapest alternatives. Pasta is currently on offer at Tescoes, Creamfield Milk there is 4 pints for £1. When I make spag bol I get a cheap jar of pasta sauce from Aldi, add half a pack of Quorn mince, some extra chopped mushrooms, onions and pepper if I have one, a tin of cheap tomatoes, and it's delicious.0

Yes, it was kind of you to let us know.
I a bit confused though. I understand you wanted to keep within budget but if DH had money it was unfair to put you under stress. I think he needs to contribute a bit more to the butter fund!:rotfl:0 -
There are some gems in Iceland, but it is becoming more ready meal style.
My iceland buys are
Bean burgers - 4 for £1, not quite as good as tescos (£1.89) though. In a bun with salsa and salad.
Burgen soya & Linseed bread - £1 (£1.40+ in tesco).
Bacon smoked, unsmoked, cured etc. - £1 for 6 rashers
They do a meat deal, £1.75 for 650g of either chicken, ham, turkey or (rarely) beef. Ideal for sandwiches, salads, omelettes etc. Just read the ingredients with this one, as they change periodically. It's usually just off cut slices. The last one I got was mustard seed ham.
and then just a few bits of frozen veg.0 -
Most Morrisons now have a cooked cold meat on their salad bar. I have found that if you buy a small 'salad' but only have the meat, this can get you through the week for sandwiches if you don't mind the same thing everyday and would be much cheaper than pre packed stuff and much better quality too!0

Butter is not unhealthy, but those margarines full of hydrogenated fats are and they taste like plastic too.
