Group Interview

Ive bagged myself an interview and its a group interview, anyone got any tips, advice etc as I've not had a group interview before. Read a few sites about group interviews and they say to be yourself but dont sit in the background. I imagine a group exercise of some sort and will need to take part.

Depends on job etc and who with.

I had one many moons ago. 20+ people in a horse shoe shape.

Had to talk to the person next to us for a few mins and then stand up and introduce the person to the others.

Then there was an introduction to the role and then an open session for questions.

Probably a bit like a big brother audition.
Job interviews seem to be about whose the loudest and most confident, nowadays.
  • Been to loads mainly for telesales and it can vary, the last one didn't involve us doing anything we did have a good long debate convo on the subject reminded me of market research more then anything! and there was this one 'talker/butter iner' nabbing everyone's questions but it didn't effect us we were all offered the job and I'm not the loudest at these types of thing! ...no idea what happened to the people at the group interview day before so must have been at the right day!! I will always think the way to shine at a group interview is to interact well with the others however they are behaving though I also believe still in the 5 second or whatever rule or whatever it is of being judged

Ones before though was more through - including maths and English test , roles plays etc. Once I was the last one in so got questioned first! ; ) I liked group interviews in that maybe you only get 1 or 2 questions aimed at you from interviewer but the downside is maybe that deflates you
If you get r/p try and get up there first if your feeling less confident, keep manners to the highest standard (it is observed I feel) and wear a suit - I've never been to a group interview where there hasn't been a spark! go get them DCFC : )

I once had to put a desk chair together with a group and set PC's up but rest assured we had got the job then!!! - never done the lets build bridges with plastic cups and straws marlarky! thank god

Fake enthusiasm. Even if it seems stupid you need to appear very enthusiastic and keen.

I hate group interviews as you often find yourself with prats but you have to pretend that their point is valid even though it's a terrible point.

Also be careful in any breaks you may have as they can watch you then to make sure how you appear in the group is how you appear in normal situations.

It's all about striking the right balance between been noticeable and not being too gobby!

Good luck. I'm sure you'll get it.

Funny I just mentioned about group interview in an earlier thread.

Yes, be neutral, be natural - it can be a bit like fighting for airspace as often people are trying to get noticed and get their point across.

I went to a group interview once and there were about 10 of use in a scenario setting exercise. Two individuals were trying to be 'top dog' and it resulted in them trying to lead the scenario - they were coming up with all the ideas between them but not including anyone else or asking anyone else or listening to anyone else. I think they thought it made them shine amongst everyone else. After the scenario exercise the first thing the interview panel said was 'So, what did you think was wrong with that?' - answer was 'they weren't working as a team' - which kind of knocked the smug look of their faces!!. It's not always the people that shout loudest or are the first people to shout out the answers that they want. A lot will depend on the role

Yes be seen to respect and take on others points of view but also you don't have to agree with that view . Sometimes you have to compromise in exercises with answers that other people believe in that you don't which can be a bit annoying but again, team playing.
