Whilst bankers get such large bonuses and their practices don't really seem to improve, then the days of basking bankers will continue.

The larger issue is what the shape of reforms should be (if any of course)

i've worked for some of the biggest banks but you should see bonuses at medical companies!

. It's about finding companies with a large amount of free cash flow who can be heavily taxed as they can't bigger off somewhere else.

    Hence the desperation for fracking.

Takes time to structure. HSBC are looking to split the UK retail arm away separately.

Weren't the EU back pedaling on splits according to their FT?

In overall scheme of things the tax revenue generated will be small.

Not really. The Tories are trying to scale back the size of the Government.

Labour want to crank out more and more spending in order to increase the size of their client group and try to lock their ideology in to the fabric of the UK's democracy hence their desperate need to find more sources of taxation at almost any cost.

Looking through the comments I thought the same. HYS used to always be pretty pro-anything Labour said.

I think it's mainly that he's trying to solve a problem that doesn't really exist. There is competition, plenty of it.

Also I reckon people get fed up with the tinkering, and complaining about the coalition without really having any vision. To really get people on board he'd had have to announce something like re-nationalising the railways, or the utilities companies. Instead he just comes up with pants ideas that do nothing but make things worse and solve non-existence problems.

It is difficult to see what advantages creating 2 more banks would actually bring for the consumer. Most people use banking for (i) current account - free [paid for by people who go into their overdraft and who buy the banks' awful premium accounts] (ii) savings account - unlikely to see materially higher interest rates by increasing competition maybe 0.1% which doesn't make much difference to anyone and (iii) mortgages - ditto but replace higher with lower.

Sometimes increased competition just brings higher costs for the consumer - subscription TV is a good example. Forcing banks to Demerge seems to risk doing the same to me.

    Really?

Nothing like the North Sea Oil & Gas revenues?

They may be scaling down the physical size of direct government, the cost still remains to the tax payer, just through private channels. The long term social and financial costs have yet to be felt.
