SA Tax Return 12/13. 8mo self employed + 4mo PAYE

Hi everyone

I was self-employed up until Dec 2012, since then I've been full-time PAYE with no additional self-employed income. It's now time for me to do my 2012/2013 self assessment having put it off (and forgotten) about it until HMRC sent a reminder the other day. Fortunately my records are clear and my affairs were always quite standard anyway. I informed HMRC when I stopped being self-employed, stopped paying class 2 NICs and they approved a reduction in my payments on account for 2012/2013.

Basically, how does self-assessment work if I switch to PAYE half-way through a tax year?

I could just fill in all my self-employment info as I used to, saying that my accounts are made up to Dec 2012. Then the SA calculation would work out my tax+NI taking into account my annual personal allowance etc.

However surely my monthly PAYE since Dec 2012 has also been taking into account my personal allowance (but on a monthly basis). So in effect wouldn't I be getting an extra 4 months' of personal allowance during PAYE?

Do I need to enter my PAYE income under "Other UK income" or add supplemental pages? Those sections don't appeared to be too geared up for entering the relevant figures from my April 2013 P60.

Will HMRC see my self-assessment and match it up with my PAYE records and send a revised calculation, taking both into account?

Thanks, B

You need an Employment page. See question 1 under What makes up your tax return

    Oh dear. Apologies!

I didn't realise that was for normal employees, despite it saying "employees". I always glossed over that and headed straight for the self-employed box, thinking it meant employed by a limited company where you were a director or something.

    Thanks for the info.

    Cheers, B
  • Some people keep their self employment status after returning to PAYE, in case something comes up.

If you are sure that you want to stop being self employed, be sure to fill in the date field where you officially ceased trading. That is the best place to notify HMRC, although some people do it earlier if they want to stop paying ClLass 2 NI.

Don't forget to claim your overlap relief if this is applicable.
