Clarivu operation

I am very short-sighted, have dry eyes and an epiretinal membrane which means that I only have 80% vision in my left eye. I am not suitable for laser surgery. When I do develop cataracts and they have to implant a lens the vision in my left eye might deteriorate further (something to do with the shape of my eyeball and the strain put on the eye). That's why they didn't want to do anything until it is medically necessary. I was so shocked at being turned down, having psyched myself up to have the op, that I didn't really take in what he was saying.
I don't know too much about the subject but I hope you find a solution!0 -
Such a pity Lolly.0

I am extremely short sighted. Not sure what my glasses prescription is, but contact lens prescription is -12 & -11.
My glasses prescription is higher still.
The reason I rely so heavily on contact lenses is I feel very vulnerable when wearing glasses. If my glasses fell off in the street, I'd really struggle to see where I was. I used to live in a house and wouldn't even be able to walk up or down the stairs without either my contact lenses in or wearing my glasses.
Glasses are very expensive for me. I have to have the lenses specially made and if I want the thinnest lens possible I have to go for glass. Glass lenses are also very heavy and they never sit well on my face. I also find that I am really restricted on what frames I can choose.
If I was in a position to afford the lens replacement procedure and I was a suitable candidate, I would definitely go for it no question. However, I have a suspicion that I wouldn't be suitable due to the high myopia I have. I think they would be concerned about potential retinal detachment. I was advised a few years ago to not take part in any activity which involved jumping or contact sports in case of retinal detachment occurring.0 -

Even if you can't afford it now I think it is worth finding out for the future if you are suitable. When I went to Clarivu I was impressed by their very soft sell approach. The examination was very thorough and worth going just for that. The eye specialist then goes through the options with you which I found very useful.
They obviously try to sign you up after that but there is no pressure and you can say you want to go home and think about it. They have a couple of options to help you pay for it, an interest free one over 12 months, can't remember the second one.
Sadly I wasn't suitable but at least I know now and the opthalmologist explained everything very clearly.0 -
Someone else had started a thread a while ago regarding this procedure. They highly recommended the Centre for Sight. They had a really good experience. They don't just offer the procedure to a certain age group, as with what I understand Clarivu do.
I would probably go to the Center for Sight due to the age restrictions that Clairvu have.0 -

you are the same as me re lenses and specs are -13!!
my spec lenses have been both plastic and glass , I think 1.74, did you have thinner ones? I do have a permanent floater in one eye, no problem so far.0 -
Cost of Clarivu ?0

aggy..to be honest I can't remember the last time I bought a new pair of glasses lol. I should really make the effort to get a new pair, although I only wear them in the house.
I hate the fact that it doesn't matter how thin the lenses are supposed to be they still look thick and you have a limited choice of frames too. The rings that you can see in the lenses I hate too.
I think the cost of eye surgery is approx £4000 per eye. I don't think that includes consultation fee, but I think it does include all after care.0 -
Thats a lotta dosh!
Yes, the rings are horrible. I dont mind wearing them as oddly I feel I can hide behind them in a way. My latest ones are plastic frames, one is comfy, 2nd pair isnt..also they are red and they show up the white polished lens edges too much. My old metal frames look the best .0 -
I don't like the white polished edges. I always make sure I tell them I don't want them like that.
There are loads of lovely frames out there & I'd love to have more choice. Also, when I try glasses on with blank lenses is they look great. As soon as my jam jar bottoms are in the frame, the glasses seem like a different frame.
Never been able to have a metal frame due to the thickness of the lens.0
