No point in worrying about what might be until the scan has been done and the doctor has told you what if anything is wrong.

    Good luck

Yes I agree - there is nothing to worry about right now. See what they say first, and even then if there is something wrong, it's not all bad news. Ask loads of questions and write things down so you are clear afterwards. Are you doing with someone else? Best wishes x

i had a kidney scan when i was pg with my 1st and its exactly the same as having a scan for a baby except its in a different place lol you get smothered in gel and a rolly type ball pressed into your back/side. its not painful or uncomfortable except when they push down really hard but its for less than 5 minutes and im sure you can manage that :D

    goodluck hun
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A

    What type of kidney scan?

I've had ultrasound scans and they're easy - just the same as having a baby scan. You'll be asked to have a drink of water and then jelly will be put onto your stomach, back or side. The sonographer will then put a probe (about the size of a packet of cigs) onto your skin and move it about to get the best pics. It takes about half an hour or so. Apart from the jelly always being freezing cold there's nothing to these scans at all.

I also perform "Nuclear Medicine" kidney scans at work - these are sometimes called MAG3 or DMSA scans or renograms. These scans take a bit longer but are no more scary. At our place we'd give you an injection of a radioactive tracer and maybe something called Furosemide which will make your kidneys work harder. We'd then put you on our camera bed and put the camera underneath you. The images take 30-60 minutes and we might ask you to visit the toilet. The cameras we use do not have a tunnel, are very quiet (we have a problem with patients falling asleep) and you don't normally need to be strapped down in an . Apart from the injection - which is no more painful than giving a blood sample - it's painless and fairly straight forwards.

Other kidney scans I don't know a lot about but I can probably find out for you.

That could be either one of ours or an ultrasound to be honest. When you get there let the technicians know that you are nervous and ask them to explain what's going to happen. Normally staff in these departments are very nice and I'd rather spend half an hour talking to a patient to reassure them than doing the paperwork piling up on my desk.

Take a good book or a magazine and treat yourself to a nice coffee and cake on the way home.

Yes - fab idea to treat yourself to some good mags and a coffee/cake. I would maybe have a little shopping trip afterwards.... not sure what Martin would say :money: ... but you're worth it!
