It seems that most posters seem to be taking the paranoid view that their employer is playing big brother. This may not be the case.

A tracking system makes logging mileage (for expense claims) far easier, and in many cases automated. They can also easily see who is closest to a client, so that they can send that person, and not have to contact loads of employees to find out who is the closest.

I used to use a tracking system so that if a client called to find out what time one of my employees would be with them, I could quickly check the tracker and give them a good idea, without having to bother my employees whilst they were driving.

As other have said, I would insist that you can turn the tracker off when you are not working.

I think this forum can help induce paranoia, we had it fitted to all the sales reps company cars, purely to make the expenses system more efficient.

Once they realised that the company didn't give a fig about what speeds the reps were doing and they had discovered the off switch it was readily accepted.

You can not turn them off, otherwise they would be useless.
If it is their vehicle it is fair enough, as two can play silly beggers.
But on your own car, what next a camera in the bedroom to make sure you dont stay up too late.

Very old technology now anyway, it can be done on a phone app for a tiny fraction of the cost of these ancient technology units.
    Be happy...;)

Fact is you dont have the mental capacity to put yourself in the shoes of someone who could be running a company. If you did, you would see the logic in tracking company time and the money spent on behalf of the company.

This is a good point. Could a sensible compromise be a hand held unit you would have with you during work time and leave home/turn off when not on business?
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
