Selling on etsy and folksy

Anyone tried it? Any good?

I'm a chef by trade, and have been thinking about selling some homemade chutneys, jams, etc. Nothing massive, just to get a few extra pennies in.

Also, am I right in thinking mr taxman still has to be informed of any profit?

  • Currently thinking of trying Etsy too - but there are existing MSE threads on it that may be worth looking at rather than starting a new one - though none are particularly helpful for details. Try these two:

(this one has a promo for first 40 listings free)

Re the tax man - yes, all income, wherever it's from unless tax-exempt, should be declared
  • I sell on Etsy and love it! I sell vintage and handmade homeware and jewellery and have been for about 2 years. It was really slow at first but now I am selling quite regularly, maybe 5-7 items per week.
Etsy charge 3.5% commission and they charge you around 10p (20$) per item you list.
As it is an American site there is lots of shipping abroad so I don't know how that would work with food but I am getting more and more UK customers as I think it's getting bigger and bigger in the UK.
I would say the key is excellent photos and good product titles. There is loads of help on Etsy though with articles about improving photography and item titles etc and there is a real community feel which is nice!
I would have a look at other people selling similar things and see how they do (you can see how many items people have sold and what they have sold on the left of their shops).
    I think it's worth a try!
    Hope that helps!
