HMRC self assessment online form???

I'm currently waiting on my activation code for the hmrc self assessment online service, while waiting, I was reading about how I do my own self assessment instead of paying an accountant:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/courses/sy!!!...sy!!!_605.html

I know that I can claim for use of a vehicle, clothes etc, but on the above link as it takes you through the step by step guides, it doesn't tell you where to enter those details...

Has anyone done this and can they help me, and also give me thorough information on what exactly I can claim for and how much and WHERE on the website I enter it in...

Once you have your activation code and login to 'self-assessment online' and actually start your return it will be obvious where to input the various expenses.

If you've read the guides you should be able to work out what you can claim.

"lots of information is available on" HMRC's website:- https://www.hmrc.gov.uk

Perhaps wait until you're able to login and then come back if you still have questions?

Here's a version of that URL without the !!! parts so it works, though it can't be a live link because it contains a sequence of letters that resembles a word with negative connotations:

    www.hmrc.gov.uk/courses/syob2/syob2/HTML/syob2_605.html

Thanks for providing the link, took a while to find the course but I didn't know it existed.
  • Ive filled it all in and its been 100% submitted, how long before the money gets put into the bank account details i provided?

Its my first time of doing this, so ive ive made any errors it'll all get checked so that i get more or less £ before the money goes in???

no it will not automatically get checked, that is why it is called self assessment

if you submit by October then HMRC will review your return, if you submit after than date you are saying to them I know what i'm doing and I stand by the figures I submit.

HMRC may check a sample of post October returns for accuracy but it will only be a sample and if they find errors here is how they deal with it...

  • Does anyone know?
  • If you have overpaid tax during 2012/13, the time the refund takes depends on the amount. Getting it paid directly into your bank account is the best way to get your money. Filing early may be another way.

I got £15 back within a week, but if they owe you around £2,000 they may hold it for "security checks". Many people on MSE have reported having to wait for several weeks.
