am needing organising with my shopping

I am throwing away far too much food that has gone past its best. the main reason being that once it has been bought and all put away I forget I have it until its green or some other awful colour. i spend a lot of my time confined to my bed where I order my shopping online, so easy to keep a track of but my son also gets a few shops during the week, usually some nice treats such as cream cakes or pastries that rarely see the light of day. to stop all of this waste I am starting to keep the receipts for reference but have lost a couple already and was wondering if any kind mse people out there have a well thought out kind of list format or spreadsheet or something similar that I could perhaps hi jack and stop my wasteful ways

Okay, can you and your son get together and decide what is needed for the week, including whatever treats.
If you want to keep your receipts then just use an old envelope. I very much doubt anyone has the time to keep up with spreadsheets etc.
Then when you order your online shop, make a note of breakfast, dinner and tea and order accordingly. If there are a few days during a wek that you are confined to bed, what about things to make sandwiches.0 -
presumably you want a way to keep track of what you have and what's been used which doesn't require you to go downstairs and look in the fridge or cupboard. Does you son live with you or is he just doing some shopping and bringing it over and putting it away?
If the latter then get him to list everything on a small white board so you can wipe away things as they are used, and also know what your options are
It would also be useful if he conferred before buying0 -
How much are you buying?? If it's just you, or even just you and your son in the house, I struggle to see how you can't remember that you bought a packet of sausages or a loaf of bread. And if you're buying online, presumably you get a copy of what you've ordered? If you're wasting a lot, why not put everything that can be frozen into the freezer the day you buy it, and just bring it out when you're going to eat it.
Also, keep a list handy so you can jot down things that are running out/used up as and when, then when you shop or order online you know you're only buying stuff you need.
Why is your son buying treats that 'rarely see the light of day'?No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
I use a spreadsheet to keep track of what food we have. I have a sheet for the cupboard, and another for the freezer.
The cupboard is listed under column headings like Tins, Packets, Bottles/jars, and I then have a list of what they are, plus the number of each.
The freezer is listed by drawer.
So, a sample bit of the cupboard would go (with grid lines between instead of the dots I had to use to get it to show correctly on here)
TINS ..................................PACKETS ......................... JARS
Baked beans 5 ................... Almonds 1 + open pack.......... Honey 1 + open
Tomatoes 7 .........................Walnuts Open pack ..............Marmite 1 + open
Cherry pie filling 2 ...............Cashews 1 + open pack
Freezer would be like
DRAWER 1 ...............................DRAWER 2
Bread 1 loaf .............................. Veg sausages 22
Mushrooms 1 small box ..............Quorn fillets 9
Cherries 2 boxes ........................Bacon style slices 2 packs + open pack
And so on.
Whenever something comes into the house, it gets added onto the inventory, and when something is used, it's subtracted.
It's a bit of work to get it set up, but easy to maintain as long as you are assiduous about keeping it accurate.

Just get a clip board and a sheet of paper, divide it up into breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks.
Then plan what you want for the next 4 weeks.
And then buy accordingly.

exactly what I was looking for. I often forget receipts medication take means a very poor memory. also some receipts items are abbreviated which make it difficult to keep track off. my son will get milk or bread and will pick up stuff that takes his eye for lunch or afternoon tea when we already have some or 99% of the time pick up whatever deals are on or things that have been reduced. he puts them away completely forgets to tell me what he has got and never picks up his receipt. I have difficulty getting down stairs and to then have hunt around so this is perfect thank you0
