Costs for the wedding are rising rapidly so trying to cut costs where we can. How easy is it to make the wedding invitations and do the favours for the guests ? Any ideas where to start ? I'm not bad at stuff like this so maybe would like to give it a go

Morning,
It is a catch 22 to be honest. You would think making favours andinvitations would be cheaper but to be honest the invitations can be done for afew pound on Vista print for a basic glossy postcard sized invite or you can gofor posh paper, gold embellished calligraphy written things which will cost£100's!
If you want something fancier it would be cheaper to do it yourself.
Favours are the same, if you just want organza bags with sweets in then definitelydo it yourself! You can get the bags of ebay or sew them yourself and thesweets can be picked up from shops over time in sales or from a local supplier.
I would look at the ideas out there online and decide what you want for yourwedding and then do a 'cost up' exercise to see which would be cheaper.
There is all ways that satisfaction of that YOU have made this part of thewedding rather than the caterers, hotels, drivers etc!
We did our own invitations, directions, RSVPs, itinerary and envelopes for90 for £20.

As scmp says, Vistaprint actually works out a lot cheaper than doing them yourself!
We made our save the date cards and they cost over £30, didn't look great and took ages to make.
Got the actual invites from vistaprint and they only cost us about £400 -
I DIY'ed our invites but got a "family friend" to print them for me as he has a printing business for 100 invitations with 4 inserts it came to £140 just for printing!! So do be careful.
I think it's come close to the £250 mark for the invitations.
I'm not doing favours as such we're having sweetie trees & table instead.

i made my invited but it was a bit of a faff to be honest...got the writing bits printed and stuck the invite bit inside some brown card and got a pretty stamp for the front and they looked ok but i think I should have just got soem of vista print or eBay!
I think ours came in a lot cheaper than others as the printing of 250 inserts (invite bit, directions and menus) came in at £20!! I think it depends where u go for printing but we were amazed at how cheap it was and the quality of it. it was just black text on white card so i think thats why it was prob cheaper!! they looked really good tho! prob £50 for everything by the end...stamps cost more than that!
I'd do your own favours, have a look on ebay for favour boxes and things, can be done dead cheap!

I think it really depends on the style of invitation you want, how many you have to do, and how much time/effort you're prepared to put in.
We made our own and it cost just under £58 to make 75 (excl. postage), but it took me a lot longer than I thought it would, and there were tears along the way!
I also made the favours for our daytime guests - sweetpea seed matchbooks - and they were REALLY easy. I used the Martha Stewart tutorial/template and just edited it in Word.0 -
DIY is a great route to save a few pennies. In the end it can end up costing more so just be careful. If your not already on it I wholeheartedly recommend Pinterest .. it's amazing. I always point my couples there for inspiration.another day another GRABBIT!0
