From Bank of England site:
All Bank of England notes from which legal tender status has been withdrawn remain payable at face value forever at the Bank of England in London. Any such notes may be presented for payment either in person during business hours, or sent to us by post.

Genuine Bank of England banknotes that have been withdrawn from circulation retain their face value for all time and can be exchanged at the Bank of England in London. There is no fee for this service. Banknotes of this type can be exchanged either by post or in person.
I exchanged an old £1 note a couple of years back and they paid me via BACS.June 16 Mortgage Amount £82,896.15

I haven't checked, but I feel you'll get more for them on eBay than face value .... Especially so the older the notes
EDIT as much as £200+ for the really old ones0 -
AS above, the Bank of England will give you the face value of the note, ie 50p- I've seen a good clean 10 shilling note go for £3-4 at a car boot.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
