Was living alone - if someone else moved in with me?

Just to check my understanding is correct, I was discharged in May 2013 but have a 3 year IPA which completes in August 2015.

I have always lived alone but have now met someone, and there is a chance he might move in with me in the future. If he does, I am assuming the OR would either ask for proof of his income/expenditure or would assume we pay all household expenses 50/50 - is that right? He earns a lot less than me, so I am thinking that actually it wouldn't be worth him moving in with me until my IPA is over!

Thanks :)

  • At the moment he is presumably paying rent and bills (council tax, utilities, TV licence, broadband etc) somewhere else. say these come to £800 a month. If he moves in with you and now pays half of your bills and your bills are say £1000 a month when there are two of you, he will be better off by £300 a month. You won't be better off because the £500 you gain from him paying half will just increase your payment to the OR.

So as a couple you will usually be much better off in these circumstances. two really do live a lot cheaper together than separately. And the OR will not expect him to pay more than his fair share of the bills.

And there are of course a lot of side benefits from living together :) Money really isn't the most important thing in life!
  • What a lovely reply, thank you :):) you are quite right, money most definitely isn't everything - I will see how things go - thanks again 😊

If he earne a lot less than you, then you could claim that all bills are paid proportinately and not 50/50. In that case your IPA will go up but it will leave your partner with excess
