Are expensive knive sets worth buying?

Options
I've had my current knive set for years and after any number of sharpening they are coming to the end if there life.

I am a keen cook and therefore my knives are important so don't mind spending money on a new set.

Are the very expensive sets worth the money? Is it worth spending £400 + on a few knives? Will they last me a life time? Is it all Hype?

Any recommendations?

    Hi,
Being a 'Golden Oldie' I've gone through several cheap sets of knives in the past. In the end, I decided that there was just one size knife that I did just about everything with, plus a serrated bread knife and a meat carving knife. So I bought the best that I could afford of those (about £50 each) and they have lasted me for over 15 years. They aren't all from the same maker. I love them - I made sure they felt good in the hand and were the right weight for me before I bought them, and there are now no knives hanging about un-used from one Christmas to the next! Just get exactly the ones you want, not a set.

I'm guessing you're talking about Global knives. Yes they are the best you can buy and provided you sharpen them properly with a quality steel they will last a lifetime. However they are terrifically expensive - a 20cm cook's knife is £85 on Amazon.

You don't necessarily need to buy Globals - there are other, cheaper but still top quality brands like Henckels and Wusthof - but as tpsjrm pointed out you probably don't need a full set either. I've got a 20cm Henckel's knife which I use 90% of the time. Occasionally I use a paring knife and I find a boning knife is handy for jointing chickens.

The best advice I can give you though is to go to a shop and hold various knives in your hand to see which one you feel most comfortable with ie weight, balance, size of handle. Buying knives online just based on pictures and the description is not wise in my opinion.
