I love the sentiment but you multiply out the ever increasing numbers of retirees, the current state of the public finances and the fact that it is politically impossible to provide significant tax rises or spending cuts and a big increase to teh state pension is a pipe dream.

People need to take responsibility for themselves, and save for their future, it's tough if you are ona low wage but it's amazing how many of such people still manage to smoke, drink significantly, buy iPhones or huge flat screen tvs, let's face it people have a choice over this as well.

I have actually retired on less than the £14k and I live very nicely thank you (and save too!). My only intention was to point out that I and I suspect many others could not manage to retire with any degree of comfort on only 60% of the lower income. I am very fortunate that I own my own house so have no rent to pay and was an MFW before I had any idea what one was and so have some savings. You need to be on a lot less than that to get benefits & also have VERY limited savings. Not a position I would like to be in.
