Removing Permanent Marker Stains from Clothes

Options
Hi,

What is the most effective way to remove permanent marker stains from clothes? I have tried a number of stain removers from the supermarket, but none has worked so far.

Thanks

  • Nail polish remover, toothpaste or WD-40, I've heard hairspray works too but not tried that one.

Apply a bit of whichever you choose directly to the stain area and blot it away with a clean paper towel until the stain comes out then wash as normal.

Another tip is to use milk! Soak the stain in the milk which will change colour as the ink fades away, if it doesn't work with the first application change the milk and repeat.

    Good luck :-)

you can heat the milk very slightly and this speeds the process up (very slightly - 10 secs in the microwave), I had some heat dried permanent marker on my white bed sheets (love those kids). I tried very cheap hairspray first, and ran cold water from the side of the fabric that didn't have the marker applied to it through the fabric to take the dissolved marker pen away rather than running it deeper into the fabric - but I found it did still spread the ink to other parts of the fabric (splashing/run-off) which was really annoying. Milk worked great though, with repeated soakings of fresh until the stain was gone, then normal wash.
    :AA/give up smoking (done) :)
