What to put on CV for gaps of employment and reference probs

There are a couple of positions I want to apply for and noticed I have not done a CV since I had my laptop 14 months ago! Tut tut I know!

I know the dates, job positions etc of my main jobs. But for 8-9 months, I was temping on and off doing various things lasting from 3 days to 3 weeks and was employed for 60-65% of the time. I could finish an assignment on Friday, go to an agency on Mon/Tues and got another stint, normally started the following day. Biggest gap of no work was the first and final 4 weeks of the period.

Then is the issue with references. Many employers prefer if I put down two. They may not get references from both, but need a back up if my sole referee will not give one.

My only one is my current employer. The previous employers have gone bust, have no contact names at all or temp agencies that don't exist anymore. I once used the name of a company that I was working as a temp, but the potential employer that seeked out the reference contacted me saying the company have never heard of me!!! I worked for them for 18 months! The only difference from me and their employees is that I got paid by the agency, not the employer. People that worked in different dept to me could not tell if I was a temp or not!

Friends is a tricky one as some I have only been chatting on FB not met them since I and they were in their late teens/early 20s and the ones I contact with have been friends for 2 years.
