Holiday Insurance

Hi, new to this, so not sure if I am in the right place, but will begin. Saved for 7 years for a 6 week holiday to visit family in Australia, bought lots of new clothes in various sales and a big suitcase to pack everything for the different climates, places visited, presents for family etc. Two weeks in to the holiday, all going well, the airline or a thief deprived me of my suitcase. I was devastated, as it contained my entire summer wardrobe plus other stuff and totalled more than the maximum on the insurance cover. I estimate I am at least £1000 out of pocket. Call me stupid for taking my best and most expensive stuff, but I wanted to look good for Sydney opera house, seeing family, visiting restaurants as well as for going on beach, up mountains etc, so I had several types of clothes. I also mistakenly left my ipod in the case due to the unpacking and packing between locations, which was the only electrical item, but it was my only ipod with all my favourites on it and an oldish one, so probably not attractive to thief or whoever took my case. Anyway, I am now home, and without case of clothes and compensation and about to begin the arduous claim process. Is there any way I can ever get back what was taken from me in monetary value, as I really cannot afford to lose so much money. I will never be able to replace everything anyway, and one or two items were special to me and had other value not just monetary. My insurance will pay me no more than I am covered for and the airline wont pay me anything other than the dollars I spent on a new toothbrush and a few other toiletries. The credit cards I have do not cover me for theft of the items I purchased prior to going away using their cards. How can I get my money back or is it lost forever. I am devastated about this, it may be only clothes, shoes and material goods but they were mine and I am very careful about my things, I feel hurt that somebody would do such a thing and naïve and stupid for not checking the amount in my case against my policy, I just didn't expect this. Any advice appreciated.

Where exactly did your suitcase go missing?

As you have stated you can only recover the maximum amount of cover you were insured for. If you have household contents insurance, it may cover you for taking items out of the home, but there will be a limit. Have you checked the airline's website that they do not pay out for lost baggage. Also if they are members of IATA, ATOL or ABTA then these associations may require their members to compensate for lost baggage.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
