Times Reader Offers

I was tempted by an offer by the Times (Times Reader Offer)to buy a Gtech cordless carpet sweeper. It cost £39.95 plus p&p £3.95. I am very pleased with the product, so much so that I decided to buy one for my daughter. I assumed the offer was time limited so I found the makers, Greys technology, and phoned to to ask them for a list of stockists. To my surprise they told me I could get it direct from them at a price of £39.95 including p&p.
Am I the only person who is surprised that the Reader Offer is,in effect, more expensive than buying in the normal way. I had assumed, somewhat naively, it would seem, that when a newspaper offers it's readers something it has secured advantageous terms because of the sheer numbers it would hope to sell. I have contacted the Times but they have not deigned to respond. So dear readers please be warned and check things out before you buy. I think that these days we just have to assume that everyone is out to rip us off!

I would not expect anything different to be honest.
Take your argument a bit further why buy your CD's and DVD at HMV when they are cheaper at Amazon and Play?

    It is always 'buyer beware'.

Difference is that The Times Newspaper is not a retailer!

If it isn't, why is it selling things ?

It can say with a perfectly straight face that it is bringing the "offer" of this carpet sweeper to the attention of its readers, who may otherwise not be aware of it. I don't think that they were ever claiming to be the cheapest source of this item
