Who to ask for a reference when leaving work?

Hi guys,

Who would you typically ask for a reference from when leaving work?

My work is mostly self-organised and rarely work with colleagues.

I do have a manager but she has recently left the company on a long term leave and have a new manager who I have only been working with for 2 months.

HR department, if you have one?

The old managers boss? Assuming your firm actually gives references beyond dates of employment & description of duties then your new manager would probably pass it up the chain to them anyway

In most organisations with a HR department then these are the only ones that can give a formal reference and any requests sent to managers are (or should be) redirected to HR.

References are rarely much beyond dates of employment, job title and reason for leaving (resignation, redundancy, dismisal for gross missconduct etc) and so its a simple case of checking your file rather than anything to do with having to know you
