I use Napisan when my whites are a bit grim. It works as low as 30 degrees and as it is non-biological it shouldn't damage the fencing technical clothing.
Checking prices, the big 3 have it for £3.79 for 800g, however you only use a tlb spoon amount in the wash so hopefully you last for a while.

For the protective gear believe the instructions for temperature, no bleach and no tumble dry. Grubby is better than injured or needing to buy new expensive kit. I assume the instructions vary a little as different brands and models use different materials. They aren't very absorbent so a fast spin and hanging near a radiator (inside out if they have a wicking lining) will dry them fairly soon.
Most important for smell is to get them out of the bag and airing as soon as possible after use. Just getting him to pull stuff out of the bag the moment he gets home and spread or hang it so the inside dries will make a large difference as the smelly bacteria won't have a nice wet place to grow. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

An overnight soak in a weak washing soda solution and then a pre-wash followed by normal wash keeps DH white work shirts looking good and smelling sweet:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls
