Job vacancy advertised multiple time

Hi guys and gals,
Just a quick question to see what others think. I saw a job advertised in November that I was interested in however didn't apply. I have seen the same role advertised again before Christmas and now I have seen it advertised again for the third time.
I am thinking of applying but alarm bells are ringing as to why this is the third time it has been advertised in such a short space of time. It's an IT role which isn't particularly specialist with decent salary so can't see them having trouble finding a suitable person.
If I was to apply and got to interview stage is it acceptable to ask the question? (I haven't had a job interview in a long time!)

Some adverts have a 90 day period on line or they have not found someone
If you have not chased up the original application you have made you wont know.
I would never ask at interview 'oh I see you have advertised 3 times' but may ask if I was turned down flat at application stage knowing I met all the criteria. We’ve had to remove your signature. Could just be a bad time of year i.e. everyone focussed on Xmas so not had enough people apply. Why not apply and if you get an interview try and find out more then?0

It's most likely a CV gathering exercise from a recruitment company. They do it all the time. Alternatively it could be someone doing market research to work out the best salary before they advertise the job for real.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Generic job description? Good sounding salary? Repeatedly advertised? I'd go with this...It's most likely a CV gathering exercise from a recruitment company. They do it all the time.
However, if you're looking anyway it can't do any harm in applying and if it does turn out to be an agency they might have other options for you0 -
I don't think at interview you should say "you seem to have advertised this job 3 times recently, can you tell me why that is?" but you could ask how the vacancy has arisen.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Could be a generic cv finding advert as mentioned.. or they genuinely didn't find the people that they wanted, either didn't have enough applicants, or went through the interview process and weren't happy with them.. or someone took the job but then cancelled.. It could also be where a job offer has been revoked sad to say or even adds to a team all in short space of time so I go with Savvy Sue's way of asking if anything because there isn't any harm in asking and helps you make the best informed decision and when your in the door someone normally revels the truth anyway or it becomes clear why..0
