are you confident that in making the cake it will actually save money?
Im sure someone may be along to share a recipe with you...however a good fruit cake is actually quite expensive both in time and money to make.
If its truly a cost saving reason behind the desire to make a cake then have you also thought about a shop bought cake that comes pre iced...M$S do wonders and actually the quality of them is very good....I have used them very recently instead of making a 25th wedding anniversay cake and I actually maintain it was cheaper than buying all the ingredients etc....and it was very well received by all who tasted it.
If you are doing it with the emphasis on homemade by the family then thats a lovely gesture and something im sure that will be appreciated....however cost it all up before you start and factor in perhaps a trial run on a smaller version if you havent done a fruit cake before.....
