First visit to the dentist in 3 years today and been advised to have all my top teeth extracted.
I am 53 and up until 3 years ago visited my Dentist regularly. Due to financial circumstances this stopped in 2010.
My bottom teeth are in pretty good condition due to the treatments I had in 2010 and we can work with this but my top teeth are knackered . I have 5 that are still solid. rest are wobbly and back teeth that were crowned years ago are now on their last legs.
So Friday 17th the whole lot at the top are being extracted
Dentist is fitting temporary dentures and then after a few months I can decide about denture implant etc,
He has told me the cost for ' lego implant' will be approx £6000.
Any advice about how to live with temporary set of teeth and how to make sure my gums heal quickly would really be appreciated.Anyone else who has had this ? Any tips about how to keep the false set in place , eating etc..:o

If you smoke - stop.
Gums heal much more quickly in non smokers. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Toothsmith , whats the best adhesive to use for the temporary dentures?
Also , my Dentist has been completely honest and told me the temps will be hard to live with, I am having the extraction and the temps on NHS. Would private temps be any better? Moulds were taken today
Thanks for any advice0 -
I have one implant tooth, I had a tooth knocked out as a child, it was put back but it started to die when I was in my late twenties. When I had it removed I had to let my gums settle for two months before the actual implant was fitted, this then had to settle for four months until I could have the actual tooth fitted, my dentist did warn me it could take up to eight months from the implant being fitted to the tooth being fitted depending on how quickly my gums healed.
When I was waiting I had a false tooth, I didn't use anything adhesive, but then again it was only one tooth which probably made this much easier as it wouldn't get too much pressure/movement from eating.0 -
Sympathies - my lad got his front tooth kicked out some 8 yrs back and I remember it cost me £770 back then for a temporary implant which he still has in now.
I picked the wrong career!0 -

£6000, a trip to poland might be in order. I'm told they have great teeth workers.
Besides, they say have all your top teeth extracted. Do they know or are they looking for work?0 -
I had the same thing happen, stop worrying about afterwards, your temporary denture will fit perfectly, this is ensured by the mould you have had taken, it will eventually 'loosen' as your mouth 'shrinks' but this doesn't happen in a fortnight. Much longer than that, my temp ones lasted over a year.
As for healing, your dentist will instruct you. If you have any problem, like chafing, go back and let them deal with it, it can just be a tiny adjusting ie filing down of the plate.
Also I have no problem eating either, my favourite crusty rolls are still in my diet and meat is a doddle.
Having them out wasn't pleasant but all done within a few minutes.
Teeth in and I walked out a happy bunny, a lovely new set of 'amsteds' and had no pain whatsoever, I had to go back a couple of times for minor chaffing but Im quite happy with minemake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Cave, I have had a full set since my early twenties so 20 years or so now. When I first had it done I had trouble with the ones the dentist had made. The top set made me gag and I had to have a bit filed off the back of it. I tried to do it myself with a nail file out of desperation lol.
I used to use poligrip to keep them but it is a faff cleaning it all off. Its really just trial and error finding out what suits you. My current set fit perfectly and I don't need any adhesive to keep them in. The only foods I struggle with are apples (I chop them up to eat them) nuts and crusty bread as little bits manage to find their way under the plate which is a little uncomfortable.
If you want to ask anything else, please do either on here or by pmThere is a forgotten, nay almost forbidden word which means more to me than any other. That word is England.

TBH it really is my own fault. We were struggling and the first thing I let slip was regular dental check ups.
Not sure if having only 5 healthy teeth left ( two canines plus one front and another couple both at the front) means there is any other option.
Dentist has entered peridontal on my info ... gum disease, although I have kept the teeth themselves really clean the bone around the teeth has gone too far.
Bit worried about having treatment abroad. What if I had problems in the future?
Thanks for the replies needed a bit of positive info .:T
I did have a small temp denture in my bottom teeth a few years ago.
One night I ate a take away curry ... next morning the temp was neon green ! Took three days and a lot of cleaning to get rid of the stain

My old man could chew a steak with his gums.
The dog with no teeth doesn't have a problem either.0 -
Just an update ..
had them all removed today ..
Nowhere near as bad as I imagined it would be. My dentist was brilliant
Numbness now gone, far less pain than when I had my own teeth and temp dentures are fantastic so far
I just keep going to the mirror and grinning
The difference is amazing
This is the first time in years that I have a full set of top teeth and they already feel like my own
Thanks to everyone who replied :T
