Child benefit - self assessment query

Hi
I am preparing to submit my self assessment online but am confused:
1) I can reduce my liability by taking away the pension contributions I have made to leave my net income - where do I find my pension contributions without looking back at the last 12 month payslips?
2) My main confusion ... if taxing child benefit is only taking effect from January 2014 to 31st March 2014, why do I need to submit a tax return for the period 2012-2013? I have a P60 for this 2012-13 period but not of course this year. Am I missing something?
Many thanks for help
