Is your son at college or uni? It might be worth checking if the institution he's at has any Microsoft agreements in place which will allow him to buy cheap.

Also, certain employers are signed up for the MS Home Use Program. This will let you purchase office for £8.95. Put your email address in the following website and it will tell you if you're eligible (Click the link "Don't know your program code").

If son is adamant maybe son needs to pay?
The free programs are perfectly food alternatives so maybe if he is insisting on MS Office he should pay.

Or buy him an older version of office?

Some youngsters can be incredible brand snobs when someone else is paying.

We had Office on our laptop (pre installed) which crashed and we've not got it anymore :(. Any work that our daughter does in college and puts on her memory stick can't be accessed when she gets home. Is there any way round this or will we have to buy Office Student (which they use in college)?
  • Some reciprocal arrangements, if you work for a company that has MS Office, you may be able to purchase a licences to use at home for £9.95 (DVD version also available). Can use on up to 3 PCs

Otherwise, a student version or old versions
