Jobhunting tips for end of FTC...

Last time I was in a job on a fixed term contract I ended up unemployed for 6 months so I'd like to try and be as prepared as possible this time...
The end of my fixed term contract will be in August this year and there is absolutely no possibility of it being renewed. I would quite like to see out the end of the project so unless my dream job comes along then I expect to be there until then.
In terms of money I'm putting aside some every month but with a mortgage and bills to pay it won't last long.
What I'm struggling with is when I can start applying for jobs. Obviously, I can't apply now and expect an employer to wait until September but when is realistic?
Also, I'm on LinkedIn and have built up a small network from my current job and previous jobs. I'm not sure whether putting something on it about my availability come September - is this a done thing? If yes, anyone have any suggestion of wording?

start looking now, it's better to have the option to turn a job down than wait and be desperate come September, you would be daft to stick with this job if a more permanent one came up, unless this one could lead to more work.
Give yourself options, start looking now.0
