Scrap gold jewellery questions?

Options
Having just cleaned out my old jewellery box, I've found loads of broken bits and pieces from years ago but I don't know if this is the kind of thing that's accepted by the scrap gold buyers.

There's nothing that was good quality, most stuff was probably bought from Argos and although I have several chains that are 9ct gold, they are not solid, they are hollow. I'm not sure if this is what they class as 'rolled gold'? If so, then is that not worth anything?

I also have odd earrings but some have stones in so will these not be considered? Some of the other earrings don't seem to have marks on that I can see anyway, but they were sold as 9ct gold (again from Argos) so do I include these or not?

Is it just a case of chucking everything in a bag and sending it off somewhere in the hope I get something (anything) for it? Or should I take it into a High St place first to get it looked at first?

I'm not expecting much but I don't want to just junk it just in case I could get something for it.

If you are selling for scrap gold then they will only accept gold over 9ct not rolled or plated gold. Send it off to a postal gold company other than the british gold refinery or london gold refinery - who are based in manchester!! There are a few in hatton garden and look for good review online although not neccessary on this site or obvious reasons
Martin and moneysupermarket needs their money!!

I have just tried to sell some gold online. Weighing and using the online Gold calculator. I was quoted £672. I sent off the gold and received a offer the very next day of £242.81. I meanwhile spoke to a local high street jewellers who have informed me that I have been offered 37% of the value,
I emailed the company (gold2pounds) and declined the offer explaining that I had used the online calculator. They said these calculators do not offer accurate quotes.
They have agreed to return my gold in 5 working days. I'm a bit worried now as I have heard some real horror stories about people not getting the gold back or it going missing in the post! I will be selling in person on the high street when I get my items back.
What have you got to lose you don't have to accept the offer and you can walk out with your jewellery straight away.
I wish I had done the same....

I do not know much about the whole gold selling experience, but this guide by MSE should point you in the right direction :)

I do know that you are very unlikely to get anything for the stones, you are better off removing them and doing something seperate for them instead :)

  • Oh dear
i sent some old bits off to
    londongoldsilver.co.uk
there are loads out there but this one seemed OK and we spoke to them first. Anyway they sent a cheque but we could have had a bank transfer if we had wanted. I think the price I got was fairly OK but it does seem to vary day to day. I did try to weight it first and checked with the spot price. One of the chains was broken and some small gemstones lost in the bracelet.

your better off trying a couple of local jewellers, - even in the town the prices can change, about 3 yrs ago i took in some broken gold, earrings, necklace, bracelet etc, only expecting to get £50, the 1st was a "gold buying only" p they offered me £200, next jewellers - £300, 3rd place offered me £400 I snapped there hands off.

The last thing I took to a jewellers was one of DDs earrings - she'd lost the one - got £11 for it xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • I work for a company that buys scrap gold and have bought in some myself. I'd recommend trying around town, as prices can vary (and had a lot of customers surprised at how much we were offering as they'd had much lower quotes elsewhere).

I have seen the british gold refinery site and its testamonials and I thought it sounds better than most gold buying sites.I recently had a very bad experience with gold refiners which is now in the hands of trading standards. So is BGR no better and would anyone advise me not to use them? Has anyone on here had bad dealings with BGR then if so please advise me many thanks.
Britain is great but Manchester is greater
