Do you know what’s on your credit file?

  • I got them all right except the student loan one. My student loan is so long in the past it would not occur to me to wonder whether it would show or not!

The information isn't always correct - I recently applied for a mortgage and found that a small business loan I have had for the past 3 years didn't show up (this doesn't altogether surprise me given how many mistakes HSBC made with the loan) (and yes, of course I told them it was missing so they could take it into account in processing my application)

Do you still have a credit file even if you never look at it?

Yes, you have a credit file whether you look at it or not. If you have a bank account, it will be on there; as will mortgage, some rent agreements (or at least the search to vet you), some insurance premiums, car payments etc.

It is something that I have never needed to do and probably never will.

Unless you live with the three Fs (Friends, Family or Fools) until you save up and purchase a house outright, you will need a credit file of some description. Also if you ever work in a bank, some sales, various accountancy/law roles (and presumably more), you will need one.
If you have a bank account, telephone, internet or whether you rent or have a mortgage; you already have one.

There will naver be car payments, all my insurance premiums are paid in full and I have never made a claim on any of them, I live in my own house with no mortgage (see badge:)) I tend to save and buy rather than spend and pay and I am never likely to take loan or a job that requires a credit check.

I have previously thought that I was a bit anonomous so it's good to know that the companies that make up these credit files will hold one on me, it shows good use of their money for no reason ;)

Presumably you had a mortgage? If you finished it in the last 6 years, then it will still show on your file.
Sounds like yours will be nice & clean - good for you. However, it's usually a good idea to check it at least once a year to make sure it's correct. Companies are known to report incorrect information; not to mention potential identity fraud.

    What is a Noddle account????

Thomas, Noddle provides "free for life" Credit Reports. The reports are useful, though the company do try and sell add on upgrades.

As a Newbie here, I cannot post a link to thier site, but you will find it elsewhere on the MSE website.

Especially as getting a mortgage without ever having a CC or OD will be difficult nowadays!

    Very sensible.

    What about student debt?

    Definitely a good plan.
