Is a 'will' recorded as a public record?

If you receive an inheritance and pay it directly into a bank account out of the uk is there any public record of the transaction?

Once a will has gone through probate, it is a public record and anyone can obtain a copy (costs £6).

If you are bankrupt trying to conceal an inheritance from the authorities will get you in big trouble.

  • The situation relates to this scenario: My partner has a house in Cyprus that was purchased with a Swiss franc mortgages round 6 years ago (with the now defunct Laiki Bank). The mortgage capital amount and payments have pretty much trebled in the last few years. However the house has decreased in value and there is a negative equity of around £100,000 because of the difference between the increased mortgage capital and the decrease in the house value. She has stopped paying the mortgage around 6 months ago and the bank have terminated the loan and are asking for full payment. My partner has no house or assets and does not earn much money. She lives with me in Portugal in a rented house where I work as a contractor.

My partner was willing to go bankrupt if it comes to it. However, she has just learned of an inheritance. She is worried that the bank may come for the money and we wondered if we transferred any inheritance money from the uk solicitors to a bank in Portugal if there would be any record of this that the bank in Cyprus could find?
