Advice needed re: Council Tax

  • Hi have you rang up the Council to see if you have the 25% discount for being a single occupant in the property. (if this applies) ie no one else living with you 18 or over..

Also have you tried to see if you can get Council tax benefit if your now on a lower income. (you won't be able to housing benefit to help pay your rent, but you Can get help to pay the council tax)

Also if you have a toddler have you spoken to the child tax credit as you should be able to get more money coming in as your partners income would be disregarded.

Who are the bailiffs are they from the council or external bailiffs etc. If they are external bailiffs then they charge for visits and letters and late payments. I would make this a priority to pay this off and you other debts bills will have to wait. AS this is a priority debt and they are aren't. Ring each one and get a special payment plan on them.

The worse thing to do is put your head in the sand. Go to the CAB and get a debt management plan set up. They can put in place a payment plan for all you debts free of charge. Or put you in touch with someone who will do it for free.

    Good luck AJ:o
    Hello,

Not sure if this is the correct place to post so forgive me it's wrong.

I need advice, I have a £700.00 council tax bill due, unfortunately I fell behind on paying as me and my partner spilt up. I was a SAHM and he was working but hasn't helped paid off the council tax...

I have now been contacted by a bayliff at my doorstep. (No I haven't let him in.) Who is coming back on Wednesday, to try and get me to agree to some kind of payment plan.
However he wants £120.00 up front to let me pay by payment plan.... I cannot simply afford this. I have no money this week it's all gone out on bills and I'm at my ends wits as the last thing I need is getting into my home and taking me and my toddler's things..

Is there anyway I can transfer the debt to my ex? On every council tax letter I've had it states he is liable for the bill too... however I don't have a new address for him would this matter?
And can the bailiff get into my property if I refuse via locksmith etc?

Please help he's coming Wednesday and I'm very stressed out! :(

I already get help with my council tax bill (well now I do lol), and Yes I've now appiled for the single person discount I've got the forms coming out and will sign them and send back ready for April.

They are Rossendales, so I'm guessing they aren't from the council not 100% sure. They won't accept a payment plan as I already stated without letting them into my home which isn't going to happen, ever. They are cowboys. We all know that.
You should probably read the whole thread before confusing people as your stating everything I've said lol. I have been in touch with CAB, and the council who said to ingore the baliffs and just pay everything towards the council for now... so. I'm not sure what your saying lol. Confused...

yes they are from the council

The council employ them under the The Local Authorities (Contracting Out of Tax Billing, Collection and Enforcement Functions) Order 1996

The local authority is always responsible for all council tax collection and enforcement regardless of who there contract is with
I am not an expert I am self taught i have no legal training any information I post is based on my own personal experience and information gained from other web sites

If you are on JSA/ESA/Income Support, make sure the council know that when you call.

An option for them is to take an attachment to benefits from you (at £3.60 per week) and chase your ex for the rest.
    .
They said not to pay the baliff's anything and to just ring up and pay the council and they said they will most likely do the rest of an deductions of benefits seeing as I'm now a single mother and will chase my ex up for the rest.

That's a result. Your council has saved themselves a lot of hassle by this route.

They could have done it earlier.
