Jsa

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if I could get some help and advice.

In August 2013 I voluntarily left my employment. I stupidly thought that I'd be able to gain employment almost straight away, in any job, so I didn't wait to have something lined up before I left.

Now, I'm struggling and have had to start a claim for JSA. I have waited until it was absolutely necessary to do this because it was my own fault and I didn't want to start a claim if I was going to get a job soon.

Anyway, I've had to now so, what I'm asking is... Will I be 'punished' for leaving my last job? Even though I've left it 4 months before claiming?

I have an appointment with the JC on Wednesday and I'm hoping that they'll pay me straight away, or pretty much, but I just need to prepare if they don't I guess. I know that no one here can give a definitive answer but some advice would be much appreciated.

I am currently receiving help from my ex husband, he is covering my bills at the moment, would this be a problem? We don't live together and haven't for two years but remain friendly and he has offered help for as long as I need but I don't want it to cause an issue.

I know I shouldnt be relying on either one of the above for help as it's my own fault for being in this position so I'd appreciate if you could give helpful advice and not bash me for it :o

Thank you in advance to everyone!

  • Might not be with time passing or what previous employer says as they apparently get asked 2 sides and all that, however you will need to prepare to be asked why have you left it so long to claim and just write out and be clear your reason's for leaving job if you are given a separate form to explain why - kind of like a statement my mind went blank during and I don't think I got it all down what really went on you know so that is why I say that, it should be made clear if the Jobcentre have a doubt and will need to refer, I remember the advisor saying it wasn't her decision to make, even if they had heard the bad stuff about the company.. you maybe sanctioned but there is an appeal process and *could* qualify for hardship payment - my sanction was up to 6 weeks for voluntarily leaving Feb/March last year so it was a while ago and I received a payment before the dreaded letter came though the sanction was overturned few weeks later, please don't be put of go to the appointment and get all the help you can x

you should be fine it was 4 months ago, and family can help you out, it's always best if they pay a bill etc rather than them putting money into your account, as it will be easier to see where the money came from and going but even if he were to give you money it's not a problem, if asked and I doubt you will be just make sure you can show it was from him rather than you working on the side.

There is a part on the JSA forms which asks what you were doing to support yourself if there is a gap between your last day of employment and the date of the claim.

good shout, yeah that's right, I was thinking more once the claim is up and running, but yeah they will want to know that, saying family helped you out is fine.

Thank you for your replies. They've been really helpful and put my mind at ease a bit, so thank you!

The money is put in my account and shows it's from his bank account/an individual and not a business so it's proved that the money isn't for work I guess. All the bills are paid from my bank account so they will have a trail of where the money is going etc.

On the form I filled in online, I did say that I was getting help from friends and family so I've been honest about it. I just didn't know how much or if it would affect my claim.

Thank you again for your replies, they've been really helpful!
