I'm having to feed my dog a lot of white fish at the mo on account of her liver problems. But it's expensive.
Does anyone know of any good value sources of fish?
Ie a neighbour has told me he used to get raw fish offcuts from a fish and chip shop for his cat so I'll look into that - but I need to avoid bones

Iceland and Farmfoods also do big bags of white fish fillets at good value. It used to be Pollack but that has now got a bit of foodie cachet, so more likely to be ling or coley (saithe/coalfish) now. You can probably still get coley at a decent price fresh, because the flesh is a slightly unattractive brown-grey shade, but it does cook up bright white and tastes very nice. Watch the bones with coley, they tend to be big and could cause problems.

Basa (river cobbler) might also be an option, it is farmed and usually imported frozen so generally very cheap but gaining popularity. When I was a fishmonger we only ever did fresh so never got any basa, so can't vouch for flavour or texture. HTH.

I use frozen white fish fillets for mine. I find fresh sardines a touch cheaper, but mine are raw-fed so get them whole, bones included.

The raw food supplier Durham Animal Feeds do a minced white fish, but that's £20.70 for 15lb so that works out at a few pennies over £3 a kilo - about the same as frozen white fish fillets. You could maybe try other raw food suppliers to see if they offer white fish at a better price.

Otherwise I think trying local shops - so fish and chip shops, fishmongers, local markets, the fish counter at supermarkets etc. to see if any can help may work out to be the cheapest way.

Not sure of your dog's liver condition, but a few of the liver-friendly diets say egg is a good one to feed, and protein in the form of dairy product can sometimes be more easily digested. And you could bulk out the diet a bit with oats a bit to lower the cost if suitable.

I've eaten, fried, Basa myself and it is okay, not as nice as Cod but at a fraction of the price. I got mine from Aldi.
  • I buy basic (MrS) fish for my cat when she had pancreatitis, it's £3.23 a kilo. Which is very reasonable.

    Why?
My dog's liver values are seriously raised and foods like white fish (and cottage cheese) have been recommended while further investigations take place. This is one instance, where mainstream vets and alternative practitioners actually agree.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Cos Funnyguy was trying to be funny!

The previous poster had suggested Farmfoods so they said Fish Foods.
  • Pollack is currently £3.29 for a kilo in Lidl, normal price £3.99, and it is actually quite nice!
