Not sure what to do regarding references

The last time i worked was Jan 2010, since then ive been a student, had my little boy and been left a single parent.
I want to start applying for jobs and get back into work but unsure what to do regarding referee's?

  • Depends on job! majority will accept character ones as well, I'm sure I've seen application forms understand about being in education with you listing last employer :)

2010 falls within the certain amount of years for record keeping so even if your last manager has moved on something could be on a HR file

The official hardened line is any employer is under no obligation to provide but it doesn't pay to worry until if you find yourself in this situation then, I honestly believe I've picked up plenty of jobs where references aren't the bee all and end all if checked at all - either direct or through an agency!
