Advice for a newbie? Am I going about this the right way?

Great advice thank you - will invest in a flask. Made a load of flapjack from ingredients I already had so will be taking that with me for snacks this week - saves a few pennies already
Alternative to a flask is taking teabags - most campus cafes will let you have a cup of hot water for pennies (smile very nicely and you might even get it for free) then use your own teabag and their milk/sugar. A flask is a great idea but only carries two or three drinks (anything bigger and you're lugging an unnecessary weight) and if you're at uni all day might not last.
Also you can probably cut your grocery bill down - I'm a student and my £100/month grocery bill includes all those splurges on campus coffee/snacks. If you make enough chilli (for example) for four portions, and freeze three, it works out cheaper than making chilli for one four times, as you'll waste less ingredients and means there's usually something you can quickly heat up on days when you cba to cook and would end up with a takeaway.New graduate trying to get debt-free.
Make £5/day challenge: August £84.08/155
I owe £5400 (plus £34,000 Student Finance)

Plus, eating 4 lots of chilli, in rapid succession, will save you money on condoms.0
